About the castle

Glamis is one of the most famous castles in Scotland. It is not like Edinburgh or Stirling Castles which stand up high on rocks because it was not built primarily for defence. This was more of a family home and one of the earliest legends tells the story of how the ‘fairie folk’ actually decided that it should be built in a valley (Strathmore Valley).

The castle is famous because it was the childhood home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, it was the birthplace of her second daughter (HRH The Princess Margaret) and it was the place where Shakespeare set his famous play ‘Macbeth’.

Did you know that many people refer to ‘Macbeth’ as ‘The Scottish Play’ because they are superstitious about saying the M-word.
