Castle Tour
A tour around the Castle will invite you to admire the rich varieties of furnishings, tapestries and works of art contained in its rooms. The telling of the story of Glamis entices the visitor into a world of history, legends and royalty.
Experienced guides ensure that visitors gain a full understanding of the Castle’s history and appreciate every attribute which the Castle has to offer. Highlights of the tour include the Victorian Dining Room which was designed in 1851-53.
Adjoining the Dining Room is the Crypt where, in the 15th century, the servants would eat and sleep. This room is also thought to contain the ‘secret chamber’ where, according to the legend, an ancestor and his friend lost their souls to the Devil for playing cards on the Sabbath....
The Great Hall or Drawing Room, in contrast to the Crypt, is a perfect example of the elegance introduced in the 17th century. This room boasts many fine paintings, furniture and a beautiful plasterwork ceiling.
There can be few small private chapels in Europe that rival the beauty of the one found in the Castle. It was here that the Old Chevalier, the father of Bonnie Prince Charlie, touched for the ' King's Evil ' at the end of the failed 1715 Jacobite Rebellion. The richly decorated panels on the ceiling demonstrate scenes from the life of Christ and the wall paintings depict the 12 Apostles.
The Royal Apartments are unique to Glamis as they constitute the suite of rooms arranged by the 13th Countess of Strathmore following the marriage of her daughter, Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon, into the Royal Family in 1923.
Among the oldest and eeriest parts of the Castle, Duncan’s Hall commemorates an actual event – the killing of King Duncan by Macbeth. Although the killing took place near Elgin, this is the traditional scene of the crime.
