- Arbroath Abbey (18 miles) Arbroath Abbey hosted the most significant event in Scottish history. On 6 April 1320 the Scottish Declaration of Independence was signed by the assembled Scottish nobility in Arbroath Abbey. The Declaration was addressed to the Pope who had given his support to Edward II and excommunicated Robert the Bruce. The nobles had to intervene in the dispute between the Bruce and the Pope. The Declaration explained how the Bruce had rescued the country from a dreadful situation and for this they would support him in all things.
- Scone Palace (28 miles) Fifteen hundred years ago, it was the capital of the Pictish kingdom and the centre of the ancient Celtic church. In the intervening centuries, it has been the seat of parliaments and the crowning place of Kings. It has also housed the Stone of Destiny .

A charming, picturesque royal burgh, the town is a place steeped in history, retaining many important historical sites and preserving the medieval layout of its town centre. An intricate network of streets and lanes around the University, ancient Cathedral and Castle invites exploration.
