Conserve energy
The Estate is conserving energy by a variety of means. You can help reducing energy by switching off lights and closing windows if heating is on. The Energy Saving Trust provides information on what you can do at home. www.energysavingtrust.org.uk
Give the car a rest leave it behind, if only for a day. Walk, cycle or use public transport. We will happily provide you with advice when visiting our ‘How to Find Us’ page.
Shop local
We use local suppliers wherever possible in our café and gift shop.
You can help by using local products; they give you a flavour of the area and help support local communities. Angus has some fantastic producers of food, drink. For local and regional produce visit www.visitangus.com
Reduce, reuse, recycle
We can provide you with a bag for life in our gift shop! You can also support us in our efforts to recycle. Please use the re-cycling points provided and ask staff for more details.
Be water wise
The UK has rising costs for water treatment and flood defences so please use water wisely. Turn off taps and use water sparingly. www.water-guide.org.uk
Respect nature
Help us to look after the landscape and wildlife by not littering, guarding against fire and using footpaths and cycleways responsibly. Ensure you follow the Scottish Outdoors Access Code and enjoy the outdoors responsibly.
Support green businesses
There are thousands of businesses in the British Isles working to reduce their carbon footprint through the Green Tourism Business Scheme. Businesses are awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold for their efforts to be more sustainable. www.green-tourism.com
Strathmore Estate is the Scottish home of the Bowes-Lyon Family. The Estate covers some 14,500 acres.
Strathmore is a working Angus estate. Deer stalking, game shooting, forestry and farming are the main land uses. Parts of the castle, gardens and exhibitions are open to the public from April to December.
Environmental Policy
The Estate’s Management team is committed to operating the estate in an environmentally sustainable manner. This is achieved by the following key objectives:
1. The Estate is committed to the Green Tourism Business Scheme as a means of external assessment.
2. Environmental issues and impacts are regularly considered and discussed at all staff meetings.
3. Energy usage is measured and controlled; for example the use of low energy light bulbs where possible, thermostatically controlled heating, upgrade of biomas heating systems and boilers and improvement to building insulation.
4. The Estate is committed to generating increased amounts of green hydro power which presently supply the Estates office and sawmill.
5. Waste is re-cycled where possible. Cardboard, glass, plastics, tin, light bulbs, batteries, fridges, freezers are all stockpiled and then taken to an appropriate re-cycle point.
6. We encourage the careful use of water and are upgrading some of our private water supply systems.
7. We educate visitors through our ground service on the importance of nature conservation, the management techniques employed by the Estate and visitors can reduce their own impact on the environment.
8. Our Estate team are actively involved with local Schools and clubs to educate pupils on the wildlife, flora and fauna of our area.
9. The game and forestry departments undertake targeted monitoring and habitat management for many rare and protected species throughout the Estate.
10. We reduce our paper usage by using e-mail wherever possible. One example of this is our accommodation correspondence which is now 100% e- communications.
11. The gardens at Glamis Castle are part organic, creating their own mulch and keeping the use of pesticides and herbicides to an absolute minimum.
12. The Estate invests heavily in the management of the Roe deer herd to ensure that numbers are managed to a sustainable level thus protecting the varied habitat for other species.
13. We purchase locally and encourage the use of local suppliers wherever possible to reduce our carbon footprint and support the local economy.
