Glamis Castle – a location to catch on film

As one of Scotland’s most iconic castles with stunning scenery in every direction, it’s easy to see why Glamis Castle is an incredible location for filmmakers.

We have collated a list of exterior and interior locations that could potentially be hired for filming purposes.

Gardens and Grounds

  • The main avenue lined with trees, and flanked at the end with statues of King James VI and I, and King Charles I
  • The castle roof with panoramic views of the Angus countryside
  • The Dutch Garden, created in 1893.
  • The Italian Garden, laid out by Countess Cecilia, wife of the 14th Earl in 1910 to designs by Arthur Castings, includes pleached alleys of beech and a stone fountain.
  • The Walled Garden, build for the 13th Earl between 1866 and 1868 to designs by Archibald Fowler of Castle Kennedy. It is the centre for production of fruit, vegetables and flowers.
  • The Nature Trail, where the keen observer will be able to spot most of the flora and fauna which characterise the Glamis policies.
  • The Pinetum and Macbeth wooden Sculpture Trail.
  • The 17th century sun dial (believed to be the largest in Scotland), and two circular towers on opposite ends of the front lawns, rebuilt in 1814 on or close to the original towers.
  • The Doocot
  • The Earl Michael bridge
  • Wildlife including red squirrels, deer and pheasants, whilst Highland cows can be seen grazing in the grounds during the summer months.

Inside the castle

  • The oak panelled Victorian Dining Room with family heraldic shields, stained-glass windows and the William IV mahogany dining table which seats up to 40 people.
  • The atmospheric 15th century Crypt
  • The Drawing Room (previously the Great Hall, where Mary, Queen of Scots dined in 1562) is sumptuous yet cosy and is surveyed by the portraits of previous Earls and Countesses.
  • The Chapel is adorned with unique wall and ceiling panels of biblical scenes from an old family bible painted by Dutch artist, Jacob de Wet in the late 17th century. It is reputedly haunted by the ghost of the Grey Lady (Janet Douglas, 6th Lady Glamis).
  • The Billiard Room, which also houses the main library at Glamis.

Inside the castle

  • King Malcolm’s Room, adorned with Lady Helen Middleton’s intricate 17th century embroidered wall hangings, which took 14 years to complete.
  • The Royal Apartments (The Queen Mother’s Sitting Room, The Queen Mother’s Bedroom, and the King’s Dressing Room), which contain several family paintings and photographs.
  • The 15th century Duncan’s Hall (home to Fred, the stuffed bear) commemorates the Glamis connection to Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
  • The 16th century kitchen, a favourite wedding venue.
  • The Castle Archives contain a wealth of historical records dating back to the 12th century and are a treasure trove for filming research.
