Glamis Castle to welcome legendary World Cup goalkeeper to Sportsman’s Dinner

The black-tie event, which is in aid of Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance, will also welcome former FIFA referee John Rowbotham, followed by some belly-laughs supplied by Scottish comedian Raymond Mearns.
Having 53 caps for Scotland and played at two World Cups in 1978 and 1982, as well as playing at club level for Hibernian and Partick Thistle, Alan Rough’s got lots of fascinating stories to tell, from playing in international fixtures against England at Wembley to sitting next to Pele at formal dinners.
Alan’s no stranger to after-dinner speaking having been on the after-dinner circuit for over a decade. It wasn’t something Alan had thought of originally, but he realised, after speaking at some charity events, that people liked hearing about his sporting experiences and there weren’t many footballers doing it.
“I tell stories from my early days in football with Partick Thistle right through to my time playing for Scotland, playing in World Cups with the likes of Kenny Dalgleish and Graeme Sounness,” says Alan. “People always enjoy my stories about the things that happened when playing against England and trips to Wembley. I played in seven matches for Scotland against England and they were always very memorable.”
His own personal career highlights mirror the stories that people always want to hear about from his footballing days. “Taking part in three World Cups was fantastic and playing against Brazil twice was a huge highlight. Another highlight was when I was 18, when Partick won the League Cup. Partick only win cups about every 50 years so I was proud to be part of that League Cup winning side.”
Having played at the highest level internationally, Alan enjoys being able to celebrate his career through after dinner events like the Sportsman’s Dinner at Glamis Castle and being able to make people laugh and reminisce.
“It’s a great feeling making people laugh,” says Alan. “I just want to make the audience happy and remember the days that I’m talking about. I’m sure a lot of the people in the audiences I speak to have been to Scotland games that I played in and its nice to share memories of those days. I’ll be speaking about players, teams, an era that many people will remember.”
Speaking at the Sportsman’s Dinner will be Alan’s first visit to Glamis Castle.“I always hear how beautiful Glamis Castle is so I’m looking forward to travelling there and sharing my stories with a new audience at the Sportsman’s Dinner.”
